Inventory Settings holds the choices that apply to your whole stock, rather than to one product. It is also where you set up the units you buy and sell in.

Go to Settings, then Inventory Settings.

General

Use the purchase tax as the sales tax saves entering tax twice. Turn it on and a product sells at the same tax rate you bought it at. Leave it off if you sell at a different rate from the one your supplier charges you.

Sell products loose lets you sell part of a pack rather than the whole thing. A five kilogram bag of food can go out as two kilograms. See below before you turn it on.

Changes are not saved as you make them. The screen tells you where you stand, with You have unsaved changes. until you save, and Everything is saved. once you have.

Units

The Units tab is where you set up what you measure things in, such as kilograms, grams, litres or pieces.

Set these up before you add products. A product is bought and sold in a unit, so the unit has to exist first.

Units belong to a kind of measurement, which is what lets the system convert between them. Grams and kilograms both measure weight, so it can work out that 500 grams is half a kilogram. It will not offer you millilitres for something measured in kilograms, because those are not the same kind of thing.

Selling loose

With Sell products loose on, you set rules for which products can be broken open and what they are sold by.

  1. Go to Settings → Inventory Settings.
  2. Turn on Sell products loose.
  3. Add a rule, giving it a Rule name that says what it covers, such as Bulk dry food.
  4. Turn on Can be sold loose.
  5. Choose the Unit it is sold by.

A rule covers a group of products rather than one, so you are not setting this up product by product.

If you cannot see the screen

Inventory Settings has its own permission, and the Units tab has another. If the card is missing from Settings, or you can see General but not Units, ask an admin.
