Categories are how your clinic services are grouped, and they do more than tidy the list. The category a service sits in is what decides how it behaves, so a service filed under vaccination is treated as a vaccination everywhere it is used.
Get these right before you add many services, because moving them later means moving the services too.
Where they live
Go to Settings, then Clinic Categories.
The screen lists your categories, with the number of services in each one beside it. A category with nothing in it reads No services, which is the quick way to tell whether it is safe to remove.
Four you cannot change
Consultation, surgery, treatment and procedures, and vaccination come with the system and cannot be renamed or deleted.
That is on purpose. Those four are what give a service its behaviour, so losing one would quietly change how everything filed under it works, in places well away from this screen. You can still add your own categories alongside them, and you can nest your own sub-categories underneath them.
Add a category
- Go to Settings → Clinic Categories.
- Press Add category.
- Enter the Name.
- Save.
To put one underneath an existing category, use Add sub-category on that category instead. Sub-categories are yours to arrange however suits your clinic, including under the four built-in ones.
Rename one
Open the category and press Rename category. Renaming changes the label only. Services stay where they are.
The four built-in categories cannot be renamed. If the option is missing, that is why.
Delete one
Press Delete on the category. You will be asked to confirm.
A category will refuse to go in three cases, and each tells you what to do first.
This category is used by services. Move the services to another category first.
This category has sub-categories. Delete or move them first.
This is a core clinic category and cannot be deleted.
The first two are worth reading as a safety net rather than an obstacle. Deleting a category that still has services in it would leave those services without the thing that defines them.
If you cannot see the screen
Clinic Categories needs its own permission. If it is not on your Settings page, ask an admin.
